Police Make a Bold Statement Spend £4.1m on Mobiles

More than 2,000 front-line police officers are to be issued with handheld computers at a cost of more than £4m, the Echo can reveal today. South Wales Police said the BlackBerry smart phones would mean officers spent more time patrolling the streets and less time sat behind a desk. The Home Office, through the National Policing Improvement Agency, has paid £4.1m towards the cost of the computers and South Wales Police Authority has paid out more than £660,000.
